Ranked among the nation's top hospitals for geriatric care by U.S. News & World Report, UPMC offers older adult patients access to a multidisciplinary network of comprehensive clinical care. Our geriatricians, all specialists in internal medicine, have additional subspecialty training in geriatrics, and many have dual training in cardiology, endocrinology, pulmonary, chronic pain, or epidemiology.
Our mission is to enhance the health of older adults by providing superb clinical care, by training others to do the same, and by conducting research to ensure that tomorrow’s care will be better than today’s. To facilitate these efforts, the Division is actively developing innovative approaches within each area and Division faculty members are creating innovative care models for older adults in all health care settings.
We welcome the opportunity to tell you more about our efforts in 2023 and hope you'll consider voting for UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside in the upcoming U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" survey.

A $14.3 million commitment from the WoodNext Foundation expands research at the University of Pittsburgh to identify causes of inflammation that lead to heart disease and dementia.
Five UPMC geriatric medicine physicians are part of Pittsburgh Magazine’s Top Doctors® list, which is compiled by Castle Connolly. The Castle Connolly Top Doctor selection process is entirely merit-based. Castle Connolly’s peer-to-peer nominations and a rigorous research process ensures only the most qualified physicians are included.
Bolstering Public Health Readiness in Long-Term Care
Recognizing the need for better public health preparedness in long-term care settings, the Division of Geriatric Medicine under leadership of David A. Nace, MD, and Steven M. Handler, MD, contracted with Abt Associates and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be a partner in the National Nursing Home Public Health Response Network. As a partner in the network, the research team develops and carries out a variety of studies focused on respiratory viral surveillance and infection prevention. By focusing specifically on long-term care, this groundbreaking network aims to learn from the crucial lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pitt Researchers Discover New Way that Cells Monitor Iron Levels | Department of Medicine
In a Molecular Cell study, a Pitt team has uncovered a novel mechanism by which cells monitor iron availability, with low iron levels stimulating stress signaling pathways to preserve cell fitness. The findings appear to be particularly important in red blood cells, which use large amounts of iron for the oxygen-transporting protein hemoglobin.
