Dr. Joseph Maroon to Receive Ellis Island Medal of Honor for Pioneering Advances in Brain Health and Neuroscience

Congratulations to Joseph C. Maroon, MD, renowned neurosurgeon, medical researcher, and thought leader in brain trauma and longevity medicine, who has been selected to receive the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor on May 10, 2025.

This nationally recognized award, presented annually on Ellis Island, honors Americans whose personal and professional achievements reflect the values of patriotism, diversity, and the immense contributions of immigrants to the United States. The award is one of the nation's highest civilian honors, officially recognized by both Houses of Congress, with each year's recipients recorded in the Congressional Record.

Dr. Maroon’s groundbreaking work in brain trauma, most notably through the development of the ImPACT test, has revolutionized concussion protocols in football and other contact sports, protecting athletes from long-term neurological damage. His pioneering research in longevity medicine, prostate cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease has further elevated standards of care and improved outcomes for countless patients.

The Ellis Island Honors Society's Board of Directors voted unanimously to honor Dr. Maroon, joining a distinguished list of past recipients that includes U.S. Presidents, Nobel Laureates, Supreme Court Justices, CEOs, world leaders, and cultural icons.
