UPMC and Pitt Neurology Showcase Innovation and Expertise at AAN 2025

The UPMC and University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurology team had a robust presence at the 2025 American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting, held April 5 to 9 in San Diego, California. Faculty, residents, fellows, and students delivered dozens of presentations and abstracts, highlighting UPMC’s role as a leader in neurology education, research, and clinical care.

Artificial Intelligence in Neurology
Wesley Kerr, MD, PhD, demonstrated how ambient AI can support real-time clinical report generation, advancing neurologic care.

Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease
Lawrence Wechsler, MD, and Cynthia Kenmuir, MD, PhD, discussed stroke treatment challenges and endovascular management strategies.

Sleep & Performance Optimization
Joanna Fong, MD, led a talk at the Innovation Hub on wearable tech and sleep tracking to optimize physician and patient well-being.

Epilepsy & Maternal Health
Page Pennell, MD, shared data from the MONEAD study, including seizure control in postpartum patients and the neurological impact of prenatal folic acid.

Diversity in Academic Neurology
Chen Hu, PhD, explored trends in gender, racial, and ethnic diversity across U.S. neurology faculty from 1972 to 2021.

Cognitive & Movement Disorders
Oscar Lopez, MD, shared updates on Alzheimer’s research and imaging biomarkers.

The team also hosted a well-attended reception on April 8, bringing together alumni, collaborators, and leaders from across the country.
