New Review Article on Group B Streptococcus Meningitis in Newborns

April 4, 2025

UPMC Newborn Medicine Program researcher Thomas Hooven, MD, was a coauthor of a recently published review article in the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society. The paper, titled “Mechanisms and Manifestations of Group B Streptococcus Meningitis in Newborns,” was written with colleagues from the University of Alabama.

The open-access review article discusses the pathophysiology, clinical presentations, and current research on neonatal Group B Streptococcus (GBS) meningitis. Dr. Hooven and colleague’s review discusses how GBS, a leading cause of neonatal meningitis, colonizes the maternal genital tract and is transmitted to infants during delivery. It details the mechanisms by which GBS breaches the blood-brain barrier, leading to central nervous system infections. The article also addresses clinical manifestations, diagnostic challenges, and potential therapeutic strategies.
