A study published in Neurology Clinical Practice examined the knowledge and attitudes of health care providers and women with epilepsy (WWE) regarding reproductive health. It revealed low confidence among providers in managing pregnancy for WWE and limited awareness of recent research findings. The study highlights a critical need for improved education and dissemination of updated research to support informed decision-making and better outcomes for WWE.
Laura Kirkpatrick, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics with a secondary appointment in neurology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, was lead author of the study. Dr. Kirkpatrick is a child neurologist and pediatric epilepsy specialist at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She serves as the director of the Epilepsy Transition Clinic and associate director of Child Neurology Clinical Research.
