After completing a BS in Nursing from Michigan State University in 2008, Spencer received his MD, also from Michigan State University, in 2012, where he earned Honors in his Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics rotations.  Spencer completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, where he has researched the use of procalcitonin and its effect of antiobiotic utilization in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.   Spencer’s hobbies include agility training with his two-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhound, playing tennis, and ice fishing.
