UPMC Presbyterian Attains National Verification from the American College of Surgeons Emergency General Surgery Verification Program

November 22, 2024

UPMC is proud to announce that UPMC Presbyterian has recently attained national verification from the American College of Surgeons Emergency General Surgery Verification Program (ACS EGS-VP). This verification demonstrates UPMC’s commitment to providing a robust quality and safety infrastructure for emergency general surgery care. At UPMC Presbyterian, we have the clinical and surgical expertise to handle complex cases that other centers are unable to manage.

The American College of Surgeons initiated the EGS program at pilot sites to trial the new quality program. Following the completion of the pilot program, UPMC Presbyterian was the first hospital in the country and the only hospital in the region to be recognized as EGS-VP Verified Hospital.

Emergency general surgery is among the most frequent types of surgery a hospital handles. EGS-VP helps hospitals and hospital systems provide high quality around-the-clock care to immediately identify and manage common conditions requiring emergency surgery unrelated to a trauma event, such as appendicitis and gallbladder disease. Verified EGS-VP hospitals have dedicated services that put into practice the highest standards in emergency general surgery. No matter the time of day when an emergency general surgery patient arrives, they receive high quality medical care from a reputable team of surgeons and specialists with specific expertise in treating emergency conditions.

“We are delighted to continue a long tradition of excellence and quality in emergency surgical care at UPMC through the EGS-VP,” says Matthew Neal, MD, director of emergency general surgery at UPMC Presbyterian. “We have assembled a large, multi-disciplinary team of experts to assure the highest standard of care for these patients.”

Recognition by this program validates UPMC’s commitment to providing quality care to our patients. As a member of this program, we can continue improving our areas of expertise by using data to compare national benchmarks and better identify areas of opportunity. As an EGS-VP Verified Hospital, we will continue to provide state-of-the-art medical care to patients in the tristate area and throughout the world.
