Comprehensive Kidney Transplant Care at UPMC
“We are proud to welcome back Stalin Dharmayan, MD, who was an American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) Fellow at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute Fellowship Program from 2017 to 2019. I had the pleasure of advising Dr. Dharmayan during his fellowship at UPMC and I’m looking forward to the expertise he will bring to the UPMC Hamot Kidney Transplant team,” said Dr. Abhi Humar, Chief of Transplantation at UPMC.
Dr. Dharmayan will utilize his extensive experience to continue UPMC’s legacy of providing life-saving transplant care to patients with end-stage kidney disease. Since 1988, experts at the UPMC Kidney Transplant Program have performed more than 4,200 kidney transplants, making UPMC one of the most experienced centers in the country in terms of volume. Our dedication to innovation and patient-centered care has allowed us to maintain outcomes that are consistent with the national average.
We have attained this level of success through our comprehensive kidney care model. To best implement this model of care, it is important that we start working with referring physicians and patients early in the disease progression. Early referral allows our team to become familiar with the patient and their specific needs before they face transplant. For patients who do require transplant, early referral helps us to address barriers and provide education about the transplant process to ensure they are an optimal candidate for kidney transplant.
Our experts take a multidisciplinary approach to treating kidney disease. Through close collaboration with the UPMC Kidney Evaluation Clinics, we offer the full scope of kidney disease diagnosis, treatment, and management. This approach allows us to provide exceptional care to patients along the entire of spectrum of kidney diseases. Our team also includes the referring physician. We will work with the referring physician and their team to ensure a seamless referral process and will collaborate with you to develop an individualized treatment plan that best fits the unique needs of your patient.
