More than 20 vision restoration experts from multiple disciplines in ophthalmology convened at the UPMC Vision Institute’s new headquarters, the UPMC Mercy Pavilion, on October 10 – 11 for the Louis J. Fox Center for Vision Restoration Conference. This annual event began in 2010 and explores the latest research and developments in vision restoration.
John Ash, PhD, E. Ronald Salvitti Professor of Ophthalmology Research, vice chair of Ophthalmology, and director of research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Larry Benowitz, PhD, professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, served course directors for the event. Topics included molecular mediators of optic nerve regeneration, new AAV strategies, gene targets for promoting the survival of retina cells, mapping retina-brain connectivity for vision restoration, and many more promising areas of research.
Established by University of Pittsburgh alumnus Louis J. Fox and his wife Dorothy, the Fox Center is the first national, comprehensive, multidisciplinary research and clinical program dedicated to ocular regenerative medicine, focusing on the restoration of sight through tissue regeneration, transplantation, and technology.
