In January 2023, the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute unveiled the Center for Aortic Disease. This multidisciplinary center is dedicated to offering comprehensive care for aortic disease patients throughout their lives.
A Comprehensive Approach to Aortic Care
The UPMC Center for Aortic Disease harnesses expertise from the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, the larger UPMC system, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. This integrated approach ensures that patients, regardless of their aortic condition or age, receive consistent, personalized care throughout their lifetime.
This center of excellence prioritizes early intervention and collaboration between medical and surgical disciplines, resulting in thoughtful and individualized treatment plans. Utilizing the latest in medical and surgical advancements, the center is marked by outstanding outcomes, cutting edge clinical research, and patient-focused care.
Patient-Centric Services
All patients, irrespective of location or underlying pathology, can access the full range of services at the UPMC Center for Aortic Disease. Our expert providers value shared patient-provider decision making and are committed to equipping and empowering patients with knowledge and emotional support.
Timely Referrals for Existing Conditions
Patients are routinely screened, and referred as necessary, for coexisting conditions such as anxiety, depression, orthopedic and ophthalmologic issues, pain management, and underlying genetic disorders. This network of referral options ensures a holistic approach to our patient’s health and quality of life.
Distinguished Leadership and Collaboration
The center is led by Arvind Hoskoppal, MD, MHS, MBA, director of the UPMC Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center, vascular surgeon Michael J. Singh, MD, MBA, DFSVS, FACS, and UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute co-director and cardiothoracic surgeon Ibrahim Sultan, MD, FAHA, FACS, FACC. Together, the UPMC Center for Aortic Disease directors collaborate with specialists across the system, including UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, to provide care for aortic patients in every stage of life.
Focus on Genetically-Driven Aortic Conditions
Genetic predispositions play a significant role in numerous aortic diseases. The center specializes in managing conditions such as Marfan Syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, Familial Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms, and Aortic Dissections. Early diagnosis, careful surveillance, genetic testing, and patient education are central to the successful lifelong management of these patients.
Specialized Care Areas
The UPMC Center for Aortic Disease also offers specialized care for conditions like acute aortic dissections and the management of aortic diseases during pregnancy.
