The 2023 Pittsburgh-Ireland International Lung Conference: Precision Medicine in Lung Diseases: From Cellular Mechanisms to Clinical Phenotypes was held in October at the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin, Ireland. The University of Pittsburgh Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine was proud to lead this conference with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, and University College Dublin, all institutions with cutting-edge respiratory research and clinical excellence.
The conference was opened by Daithí de Róiste, the Lord Mayor of Dublin and Head of Marketing, Communications, External Relations, and Stakeholder Management at UPMC Ireland. This was followed by an address from keynote speaker Dr. Rajeev Venkayya, CEO of Aerium Pharmaceuticals, on preparing for the next pandemic. Dr. Venkayya previously held the role of Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Biodefense at the White House and is the former president of the Global Vaccine Business Unit at Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
Committee members for this year’s conference included Alison Morris, MD, MS; Melanie Königshoff, MD, PhD; and Patrick Strollo, MD, from the University of Pittsburgh Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.
This year’s conference brought together international leaders to discuss the use of precision medicine to understand the causes of lung disease. Experts shared their development of novel therapies through presentations on innovative clinical, translational, and basic research. Attendees from the United States, Ireland, the UK, and Europe shared ideas on the role of precision medicine in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Aging and Fibrosis, Sleep, Acute Lung Injury, Asthma, Lung Cancer, and Pulmonary Hypertension. Early career investigators featured their work in poster sessions and oral presentations. Conference attendees also enjoyed interacting and collaborating during a gala dinner.
The 2024 Pittsburgh International Lung Conference: From Smog to Social Equity: How the Exposome Shapes Our Respiratory Health will be held in Pittsburgh from Sept. 19 to 20th.
