UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute Welcomes Cardiac Surgeon Irsa Hasan, MD

The UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute is proud to announce the addition of cardiac surgeon Irsa Hasan, MD, to our team.
Dr. Hasan has extensive clinical and research experience relating to cardiothoracic surgery. Her expertise will contribute to the continuation of UPMC’s legacy of life-saving cardiac surgical care.
Clinical and Research Expertise
Dr. Hasan received her medical degree with honors from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine (UNMC). She then completed a residency in general surgery at Mayo Clinic. Following her residency, Dr. Hasan completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at UPMC and a robotic cardiac surgery advanced fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where she served on the faculty.
Dr. Hasan is board-certified in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. Her research interests include coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and aortic pathology, with a focus on mitral repair strategies and minimally invasive interventions. Dr. Hasan has served as a writer on over 50 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters. She also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
In addition to her clinical and research experience, Dr. Hasan is passionate about medical volunteerism and education. Since 2013, she has served as a medical volunteer on various mission trips and in several clinics, providing cardiac surgery services to underserved communities.
