The UPMC Department of Otolaryngology is excited to welcome Chloe Santa Maria, MD, MPH, Peter Santa Maria, MD, PhD, and Greg Basura, MD, PhD, as the newest faculty members in the Department.
Dr. Chloe Santa Maria is currently a laryngology fellow at the USC Voice Center in Los Angeles and will bring new research and clinical expertise to the UPMC Voice Center. She received her MBBS from the University of Western Australia and her MPH from the University of California, Berkeley. She was part of the Stanford Residency Class of 2023. As a laryngologist, Dr. Chloe Santa Maria will introduce a novel translational research program to the Division of Laryngology.
Dr. Peter Santa Maria received his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of Western Australia. He was the Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery fellow at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Western Australia before undertaking a three-year instructorship at Stanford University in Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery. He joined the Stanford faculty in 2017, where he is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr. Santa Maria’s lab discovered a tympanic membrane regenerative therapy, which has completed pre-clinical work and is part of ongoing clinical trials. As a surgeon-entrepreneur, Dr. Santa Maria has co-invented several medical devices and therapeutics that are in development and is actively part of device research teams testing new otolaryngology devices.
Along with Thanos Tzounopoulos, PhD, Dr. Santa Maria will lead the development of the new Pittsburgh Hearing Institute at UPMC Mercy Pavilion. He will be Vice Chair of Clinical and Translational Research within the Department, Chief of the Division of Otology/Neurotology, and named Director of Faculty Innovation as part of the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Dr. Basura will join the faculty effective September 1, 2024. Dr. Basura is an experienced surgeon-scientist, educator, and leader in global otolaryngology.
He is currently an Associate Professor with Tenure at the University of Michigan Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He completed a PhD at Wayne State University and received his medical degree from the University of Washington. Dr. Basura completed his residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, along with an otology-neurotology fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is currently pursuing an MBA at the Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business.
Dr. Basura will join the basic and translational research program in auditory sciences led by Thanos Tzounopoulos, PhD, and Peter Santa Maria, MD, PhD. He will be a key member of the Pittsburgh Hearing Research Center in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. His research, funded through the NIH NIDCD, focuses on human translational studies using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate central auditory pathways in unilateral sudden hearing loss and tinnitus.
