Takuya Ogami, MD, Joins UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon

UPMC Hamot is proud to welcome Takuya Ogami, MD, who will join our cardiac surgery team in July 2024.

Dr. Ogami has extensively researched subjects relating to cardiothoracic surgery medicine, with close to 50 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored books published and numerous oral and written presentations. Dr. Ogami’s expertise will contribute to the continuation of UPMC’s distinguished reputation as a leader in cardiac surgery.

Clinical, Research, and Academic Expertise

Dr. Ogami received his medical degree from the Juntendo University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan. Following this, he completed a residency rotation and intensive care medicine fellowship, as well as a senior residency in cardiovascular surgery, at the Kameda Medical Center in Chiba, Japan. He also was a fellow at the United States Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan.

Dr. Ogami began his general surgery residency at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, FL and completed it at NewYork – Presbyterian Queens Hospital in Flushing, NY.

Dr. Ogami completed his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, followed by the completion of a clinical fellowship in minimally invasive cardiac surgery at New York University Langone Health.

Dr. Ogami is board certified in general surgery and serves on the editorial board for BMC Cardiovascular Disorders. He is an active reviewer of publications, with the majority focused on the characterization, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the heart and circulatory system.

He is a member of the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery.

In addition to his clinical and research expertise, Dr. Ogami is passionate about aortic valve disease and thoracic aortic disease, including minimally invasive approaches. 

He is excited to join the UPMC team because of the numerous outstanding surgeons, cardiologists, advanced practice providers, and an extensive support staff.  The many opportunities for cutting-edge interventions and the resources for research solidified his decision.

Cardiothoracic surgical services at UPMC Hamot include:

  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)
  • Minimally invasive heart valve surgery (mitral and aortic valve repair and replacement)
  • Surgical revascularization: coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) on the beating heart and off-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery (OP-CAB)
  • Off-pump coronary bypass surgery
  • Surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation (Maze procedure)
  • Left-ventricular reconstruction
  • Video endoscopic surgery
  • Minimally invasive exclusion of the left atrial appendage for stroke prevention
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and insertion of ventricle assist devices (VADs)
