UPMC Department of Urology faculty including Roger D. Klein, MD, PhD, John M. Myrga, MD, and Paul J. Rusilko, DO, FACS, along with colleagues from the UPMC Departments of Urology and Plastic Surgery, recently published a study in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery titled “The Role of Suprapubic Superficial Fascial System Reconstruction During Repair of Adult-Acquired Buried Penis.”
The purpose of this study was to improve postoperative cosmetic outcomes and decrease wound complications following adult-acquired buried penis repair. The team performed an anatomic and histologic study of the superficial fascial layers providing support to the external male genitalia and describe their approach for fascial reconstruction. Results showed that reapproximation of the fundiform ligament and superficial fascial tissue following suprapubic abdominal fat pad removal during adult-acquired buried penis may improve postoperative cosmesis by reducing strain on the dermal closure.1
