The Heart Institute at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is excited to welcome our newest congenital cardiac surgeon Richard Tang, MD. Dr. Tang brings a breadth of experience and knowledge in pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery to the Heart Institute team.
Dr. Tang received his medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He then completed his internship in general surgery at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Following this, he completed a residency in cardiac surgery at McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Tang then completed a fellowship in congenital cardiothoracic surgery at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and, more recently, at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Clinical and Research Interests
Dr. Tang’s clinical and research interests include pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery, neonatal cardiac surgery, single ventricle palliation, and mechanical circulatory support. His previous research publications have examined areas of pediatric cardiac surgery, including complex single ventricle anatomy, hypoplastic left heart complex, mitral valve replacement in small infants and children, and pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect.
Richard Tang, MD, is an active member in various professional organizations, including the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons. He is also the official medical illustrator for the World University for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery and has produced surgical illustrations for multiple publications.
With the addition of Dr. Tang, the Heart Institute team will continue to provide comprehensive, specialized congenital heart care to pediatric and adult patients.
